Diving will be so much more enjoyable when you know where you are, and which direction to swim to get back to the boat, or exit point. Once you complete this Navigation Specialty Course you will gain independence , so you won't be reliant on your buddy to lead the dive because of your tendency to get lost. Your knowledge and experience from this Navigation Specialty Course will make you feel comfortable and confident on each dive, as you will know where you are, which direction to swim to get you to your destination, and feel assured that you will never get lost underwater again.
Course Overview:
This Navigation Specialty Course is a two-part course, consisting of a academic classroom session and open water dive session. Each session will cover the following topics:
The academic classroom session:
--Importance of understanding underwater navigation
--Proper compass operations and techniques
--Natural navigation
--Underwater courses and patterns
--Methods for estimating underwater distances
--Relocation entry and exit points
--Hands-on exercises with four courses and multiple headings
Open Water dive Session:
--Review and practice of academic classroom exercises
--Dive planning procedures, organization and techniques
--Methods of estimation distances underwater
--One natural navigation course
--Four navigation courses with multiple headings
Course Prerequisites:
--Certified open water scuba diver from any WRSTC Agency
--Certified open water junior diver from any WRSTC Agency
How long is the course?
--One 3 hour academic class with outdoor exercises
--Two open water dives
What does the course include?
--Text books and all other instructional materials
--Video tape or DVD (additional costs)
--Use of a variety types of underwater compasses
What do I need to provide?
--Good quality underwater compass
--Scuba diving equipment, exposure suit, and two full scuba tanks
(Scuba equipment is available for rent from Steve's Scuba Center)
